Dr. Steve Arthey

This website describes the psychological services provided by Dr. Steve Arthey. It describes the psychotherapy treatment, training, and workshops that I provide.

I have been working as a clinical psychologist for over 30 years. For 11 years, I was the Senior Clinical Psychologist at a large private psychiatric hospital in Melbourne, Australia, where I directed psychotherapy programs for depression, anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, and PTSD.

I have conducted a private practice throughout my professional career and received extensive training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Between 2010 and 2023, I provided an internationally accredited ISTDP training program to registered mental health practitioners. Over 100 registered mental health practitioners completed training in ISTDP with me.

I have published articles on the theory, research and practice of ISTDP in peer-reviewed publications.

Over the last five years, I have developed a short-term dynamic psychotherapy called Affect-State Therapy (AST). It is underpinned by attachment theory, current understandings of neuropsychology, and how change occurs in psychotherapy. I now practice AST and teach it in my psychotherapy training program.

Training, supervision and workshops are restricted to health professionals working in a psychotherapeutic environment. There are currently around 40 health professionals in training with me.

My private practice is in Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. Treatment is available in person or online via Zoom.
